Maintenance Plan
The first 3 coats of varnish on your bench or patio set is coated with a water based varnish to allow the fresh timber to dry, most timber has a 13% moisture content that must be naturally extracted by the weather. This drying process takes more or less 12 months.
During this process tiny cracks and a little flaking takes place, don’t panic! It’s very normal in most timbers.
With the white varnish the knots in the timber will become quite noticeable as they start drying out, once more, don’t panic its normal!
If this drying process is not allowed to happen and you over varnish your furniture, the wood will rot from within.
After 1 year
Sand the bench lightly with a fine sand paper.
Purchase 5 litres of “DULUX WOOD GUARD” and 1 litre of “turps”.
Mix 1 litre of varnish with 1 ltr of turps thoroughly, apply thickly and allow it to dry for 24 hours - use a good brush.
The next coat must have less turps, sand lightly again.
The final coat should be pure varnish.
If you would like to continue using the water based varnish it can be purchased from us.
Same varnishing procedure, but just use water instead of turps, however, the drying time is only 30 minutes between coats.
The darker the colour, the more UV chemicals in it.
